What's New Archive: September 2009
What a great time I had painting on beautiful Mackinac Island! Gorgeous weather all day long, wonderful people to talk to--like the nine ladies who gathered from all over the USA to celebrate Carissa's 40th birhday. That's the birthday girl next to me in the front row holding my book that one of her friends gave her as a birthday gift. Such a fun bunch they were! And thank you to the good sport who cut short a phone call to Brazil to take our picture.
People sometimes say, "I don't want to interrupt your painting." I always answer, "I'm here to talk as well as paint. If I didn't want to be interrupted, I would have stayed home isolated in my studio. This is MUCH more fun!"
In between chatting sessions I managed to finish and frame four new small (3 1/2" x 4 1/2") paintings. Order online or let me know which original you'd like me to paint just for you.

Labor Day has come and gone—the official end of the summer season. We’re now heading into the just-as-beautiful autumn with many opportunities for art, culture, and fun Up North in Michigan. The leaves have started to turn—check with local Chambers of Commerce for best dates for color in their areas. |

During my September 4 watercolor demonstration in front of Victorian Summer Gallery on beautiful Mackinac Island I painted several small Mackinac Bridge framed pieces to commemorate the Bridge Walk. They are for sale on my website for $35-$45 each.
I have done and plan to do more small paintings like these—Mackinac Island scenes, Mackinac Bridge, area lighthouses, flowers, and more. Technically these are not traditional “miniatures”, even though they are framed in 3 ½” x 4 ½” wooden easel-back frames; just small, affordable pieces of original art. What a thrill to see one of my first painting instructors again! Lihting Li (Lily Kostrzewa) stopped by the gallery as I was painting and we reminisced about our classes together and her warning about too heavy a hand when painting watercolors: “Light touch, light touch!” she’d say. That advice sticks with me today as I paint my airy Mackinac Island scenes.
