SPRING 2019

WATERCOLOR NATURE JOURNALING RETREAT

Announcing my first ever painting/journaling retreat! Give yourself a gift: three days away in a beautiful wooded retreat center.  It will be a time of learning, reflecting, and creating an experience through watercolors and journaling as we explore joyful ways to express ourselves in our journals. It’s all about seeing in new ways, and that’s what I’ll teach you to do at the beautiful Kettunen Center near Tustin in the heart of Michigan’s lower peninsula.

NEW PAINTINGS

All six of these designs will be available on my website: www.maryloupeters.com

I discovered something about the way I paint at a recent creativity workshop: Music makes a difference in how tightly or loosely I paint.  I usually listen to classical or Enya, but during the workshop the music was James Taylor’s and Aretha Franklin’s and my style became very loose as I painted this watercolor Sunflower Face. Embrace change!

As the workshop continued, I was encouraged to try new materials. This Red Tulip was done with oil pastels and coated with wax to make the colors more brilliant.

I have been going through my art supplies—found these wax pastels and decided to give them another try. I do love their bright colors on my Windowsill Geraniums!

My Lavender Trio paintings were inspired by a trip to Lavender Hill Farm last summer. What a peaceful day I spent painting among the beautiful purple blossoms!

CURRENT PROJECTS

I’ve designed some new Mackinac Island pins just for the collectors among you! So many of you have shown me on Facebook what you’re doing with these pins purchased from the vending machines on Mackinac Island and at Little Luxuries and Island Bookstore. Your collections are stunning, and you’ve asked for more designs. I’m honoring that request—they are being tweaked by the pin maker now—so watch my website, www.maryloupeters.com for new pin and magnet designs.

This is the time of year when I am very busy scheduling and planning classes for the spring, summer, and fall. See CLASSES section for the schedule.  They are also listed on my website and will be updated on Facebook.

UPDATE

I spent the first two months of 2019 on Sanibel Island, Florida painting and teaching classes—the weather was gorgeous, and so were the tropical colors and beautiful gardens. I filled a sketchbook and made four little accordion books while there. I don’t plan to make cards of these pages, but I’d like to show you some of my sketches. See my CLASSES section of this newsletter to see more about an accordion book class.

DEMONSTRATIONS

For the last four years I’ve worked closely with Little Luxuries Artists Market of Mackinac Island providing them with cards, prints, magnets, original paintings, and books. I love to do watercolor demonstrations there on Artist Appearance Days when I can meet customers and talk about the joy of painting and listen to their personal experiences of being there on their favorite place, Mackinac Island.  I’ve been invited to do six demonstrations this season -- all on Friday afternoons from 2-4 pm: June 21 & 28, July 19 & 26, and August 16 & 30. Please stop in and see me at Artists Market of Mackinac Island (7344 Main Street near the purple awnings). I’d love to chat with you!

CLASSES

NEW CLASS * * GARDEN JOURNALING * * NEW CLASS * * GARDEN JOURNALING

June is a perfect time to learn how to keep a garden journal—a record of growth or simply of what’s coming up in your own garden or in the gardens around you. Begin it in June and keep it throughout the summer and fall. Class will take place in my own garden (between Cheboygan and Mackinaw City) on June 18 and 19. We will meet here from 10-4 both days—bring a brown bag lunch and we’ll eat at the picnic table. We’ll discuss new layouts, what to include in your garden journal, and learn ways to bring joy to the pages of your journal through your own unique illustrations. Cost is $149 for the two-day class and you may register by calling me at 231-818-6365 or emailing me: marylou@maryloupeters.com .

NEW * NEW * NEW * LAVENDER HILL FARM CLASS * NEW * NEW * NEW

As part of the Summer Artisan Series I’ve been invited to teach a watercolor class at the beautiful Lavender Hill Farm near Boyne City, Michigan. By the time of the class, July 11 from 1-3 p.m., many varieties of lavender should be in full bloom and the inspiration will be all around us to paint a cute little watercolor of a lavender bundle. What a great way for beginners to try watercolor painting—a fun experience while on vacation or at your summer home. Everything you need will be furnished and no drawing experience is necessary. You’ll get a basic understanding of what watercolor painting is all about and you’ll leave class with a finished painting (suitable to frame in an 8x10 standard frame) that YOU have created. Cost is $49 and you may register by sending a check to me at PO Box 855, Mackinaw City, MI 49701. Questions? Call or email me at (231) 818-6365 or email me at marylou@maryloupeters.com. Come spend some time wandering through the fields of lavender before class to be held in the gorgeously-remodeled Events Barn—what a wonderful summer day it will be!

MACKINAC ISLAND CLASSES * MACKINAC ISLAND CLASSES

The Manoogian Art Museum will be the site of my six evening watercolor classes (6-8:30) on June 10, June 24, July 15, July 22, July 31, and August 12.  Each is a completely separate class, appropriate for students of all skill levels. Everything for these classes is supplied—you don’t need to bring anything—it’s a good way to try watercolor painting without investing in any supplies, and it’s a wonderful way to spend an evening of your vacation on beautiful Mackinac Island. These classes are sponsored by the Mackinac Arts Council which subsidizes the cost to keep it low—only $10. My classes fill quickly so register soon (online only) on the Mackinac Arts Council’s website, www.mackinacartscouncil.org.

NEW this summer—a WATERCOLOR ACCORDION BOOK! People love my accordion books—they’re a fast and fun way to record a visit to a favorite spot. Now you can learn to make these cuties to give as gifts or to display in your own home. You’ll cut and fold two types of accordion books and learn to choose just the right scenes to include in your own little folded journal. This one-day class will be held at Mission Point Resort on beautiful Mackinac Island on September 9 from 10-4. The weather and gardens should be lovely that time of year, but in case of rain we’ll set up in our indoor classroom. Cost is $80 and you may register online at www.mackinacartscouncil.org.

TAWAS CLASS: A watercolor class for all skill levels is scheduled for August 7, 2019 from 10-noon at the Tawas Bay Art Gallery at 302 Newman Street in downtown East Tawas, Michigan. All supplies will be furnished and the cost is $35.  We will be painting a sailboat at sunset. Call the gallery to register for this class: (989) 362-5613.

BOOKS

My books would make perfect gifts for Mothers Day or any occasion for family members or friends. I loved writing these books and painting the illustrations for them. They may be ordered through my website, www.maryloupeters.com.

FEED YOUR SOUL/QUOTE OF THE MONTH

“Faith is taking the first step, even when you don’t see the whole staircase.” (Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.)

As I’ve matured, the shy young girl I used to be has given way to a bold woman, unafraid to take chances. My life experiences have taught me to embrace the changes that inevitably come with life and overcome the fear that sometimes comes with change. I can think of so many examples in my life that have led to this way of thinking and I’ll bet you can too when you examine your own life. So move confidently through your life. Take that next step, whatever it is. Have faith that things will work out for you when you take that first step, even if you can’t see the whole staircase.
